Starting Solids
Over the weekend we started the Sapling on solids. While I had originally planned on waiting an extra 2 weeks for her to hit the 6 month mark, she has been so fascinated with food and watching me eat of late that I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try some baby rice cereal a couple of weeks early. I mixed it up with a generous dose of breast milk and we gave it a whirl. She loved it. In fact on the 2nd day she was demanding more and is trying her hardest to hold the spoon herself while feeding too.
When she hits 6 months I am moving to a baby-led weaning approach. It’s apparently extremely messy so I will be shopping this weekend for a very basic plastic high chair that can fit in the shower for hose offs if required and a couple of plastic tablecloths for the floor. I have the following book on hold at the library and am super excited about trying some of the recipes and getting into the spirit of a baby led approach to solids.
Because it was such a milestone in our daughters life, we did a dodgy iPhone video of her eating her first solids which I’ve linked below. One of my pesky cats also decides to make an appearance!

Awwwwwww – now you’re making me so broody
Mess – ha that is not mess – you ain’t seen nothing yet – wait for it to be in the hair, ears, all over the floor, tray, clothes! Give her a spoon of her own to practise with while you have the control spoon with the majority of the food on
You are right though – she IS gorgeous.

Thats a great tip about the spoon – I’m currently doing that while we eat so she feels she’s part of the meal but its a good idea to keep her hands busy while trying to feed her otherwise she wants to be too involved lol.

I believe the way to go with hose-off highchairs is the Ikea one, $30, can’t find a bad review of it!
| Posted June 17, 2011, 1:27 pmI think I’ll look into the Ikea ones – we were at Pram Warehouse today and got our car seat but all the high chairs were expensive and very padded. So will have to keep investigating. I should be right to feed her in the bumbo seat for a couple more weeks until then in any case, unless her legs get chubbier anyway!
